Safety Tips & Rules
Important information for riding in Laos. Please read before you hit the road.
International Driving Permit
An IDP is officially required in Laos. While enforcement varies, carrying one protects you with insurance claims and police checkpoints.
Helmet Law
Helmets are mandatory by law in Laos. Police fine riders without helmets — typically 50,000–100,000 LAK ($2.50–$5). We provide helmets with every rental.
Speed Limits
Speed limits are 40 km/h in town and 80 km/h on open roads. Drive slower on rural and unpaved roads. Speed traps exist on the Kuang Si road.
Road Conditions
Main roads are paved but watch for potholes, loose gravel, animals, and construction. Avoid riding at night — many roads are unlit and hazards are hard to see.
Weather & Wet Season
Roads can be slippery in wet season (May–October). Afternoon rain showers are common. Carry a rain poncho and reduce speed on wet surfaces.
